 Supply List for Class

These are suggestions for materials for the class. The list assumes that you do not have supplies. If you already have materials, bring what you have. I would like for all students to paint on a paper which is bound in a block. About 15 sheets of watercolor paper are glued on all sides in a block. The advantage is that the paper does not buckle and have valleys as you paint. The best place to buy supplies is the Plaza on 7th Avenue in Nashville. However, I based the list below on products which can be found at Hobby Lobby in Madison. The supplies should run about $50.

Paper: Strathmore Watercolor 9X12 Cold press block

Paint: Watercolor in tubes. Hobby Lobby has phased out all brands bought by the tube except the most expensive professional grade, Winsor Newton. I recommend that you purchase a watercolor set to get you started and then add colors later as you paint. Art Creation Expressions by Royal Talons Watercolors has a set of 24 colors for $12.99. If you decide to buy individual tubes, you may need to go to Michaels. The Cottman or Grumbacher brand is sufficient. Here is a list of beginner colors to start with:lemon yellow, Cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, permanent rose.

Brushes: Three  watercolor brushes to start. Two flats and one round: 1/2 inch flat, 1 inch flat, and a #6 or #8 round brush. Hobby Lobby has a line of reasonably priced brushes (about $6 each). The brand is Royal Langnickel Majestic labeled for oil, acrylic or watercolor. Here are the code numbers to help you get the right brushes; Glaze Wash Flat 1/2"- R4700,Glaze Wash Flat 1"-R4700-1, Round #6- R4250-8.

Palette: You need a palette with a large area to mix colors. Hobby Lobby has a palette which is about 10 x 14 called a Sealable Paint Palette.

Miscellaneous: container for water, paper towels, pencil, eraser

WELCOME TO SUSAN'S ART STUDIO

Watercolor Paintings from Alexis Lavine's Workshop in Boone , North Carolina.
The theme was painting on surfaces other than cold press paper.
The last painting Friday was completed on masa paper.

On Monday the project was to paint on hot pressed paper, which is very smooth.

Tuesday's project was aquaboard, a textured surface on masonite board. The truck was painted on aquaboard (clayboard).

Wednesday: The barn with sunflowers was painted on watercolor canvas. Once I got the sky in, the rest of the painting was a breeze. I spent over an hour on the sky and cloud.

Thursday:The next painting was on cold press paper which had several coats of gesso on it. The paper was prepared several days ahead of time so that the dried gesso acted as a barrier to the watercolor.

This was the class demo project on gessoed cold press paper. I finished this at home yesterday.
